Whew! Can you believe we’re halfway through 2020? What a year it’s been so far! On one hand, SO MUCH has happened. On the other, the months feel like they’ve blurred together and suddenly we’re in July and I’m asking myself, “Where did the last SIX months go?!?” I know your personal experience of the past few months will be unique to you; however, I also know that we’ve all been affected by the collective environment that we live in. That’s why with today’s email, I want to offer you a tool I’ve used to help myself recalibrate and refocus when I’m wanting to face the future with a sense of clarity. I want you to feel empowered as we enter the second half of 2020, and to know that you’re equipped to make bold, brave decisions that align with where you ultimately want to go in life. I know there are many ‘spiritual’ tools such as prayer, worship, studying Scripture, etc. but I trust you know some of those already. ? This tool is more practical and comes in the form of a question. I know that good questions lead to good answers and I hope you’ll find this one to be as helpful as I have. Ask yourself this question: What’s the one thing that, if I were to focus on it over the next six months, would have the greatest positive impact in my life? Feel free to sit with the question for a few minutes but don’t be surprised if the answer comes to you right away. We are intricately designed and have an inbuilt wisdom imparted to us by our heavenly Father that is incredibly accurate when we know how to tap into it. Once you get the answer, write it down. You’ll know it’s right because it will have a sense of ‘life’ on it. It’s often something you already ‘know’ but may not be actively working on. And I guarantee it will absolutely be something within your power to implement, even if it takes resolve. Also, it won’t necessarily look like adding MORE to your to do list. If what you need is more rest or creativity, don’t get hung up on feeling like your answer should include increasing productivity in your life. Collectively, with all that’s happened this year I actually feel there’s a huge opportunity to slow down and take stock of what’s truly important in life right now—relationships. health, rest, meaningful work, contribution, listening to others with perspectives and experiences other than our own, real conversations, accepting the invitation to heal on a deep level, etc. But I can’t tell you what that looks like for you. Only you have the answer to that question. Personally, I often like to write my answer in a journal and explore some of the reasons behind why it feels important in this season. Knowing your ‘why’ is a great way to build leverage and can inspire us to follow through more wholeheartedly. Then, commit to taking action. Find an accountability buddy. Join a group. Sign up for the class. Hire the personal trainer. Schedule the counseling session. Set up the coffee date. Take a step towards your desired outcome and trust the grace to follow because it will come as you step out. Resist the urge to become daunted by the journey and simply take the next action in front of you. Believe me, YOU are worth the investment. No matter how the first half of this year went down for you, I’ve got good news. The second half of 2020 has the potential of being the best six months of your life. No joke! And it’s not because everything out there will go perfectly (because it may not), it’s because you have the ability to make life-giving choices for yourself. And when you focus on what you CAN control in your life—your choices—then you’ll feel more empowered and less anxious about what you can’t control.
